Winchester Model '97 6-Round Conversion
By Wild Bodie Tom
Original Winchester ‘97s were designed to hold six 2-5/8" shells in the magazine. But with modern 2-3/4" rounds, 6 rounds usually fit too tightly to feed the first round. When shootin' Wild Bunch matches, you'll frequently need to engage six shotgun targets. To save time on the clock, you'll want your shotgun to hold all six 2-3/4" rounds.
Wild Bodie Tom (SASS #67918), a gunsmith of 35 years, designed these 6-round conversion kits. The kit contains a customized spring and follower. It works because the spring is tapered so it collapses inside the follower, thus allowing more room in the tube for a full six rounds.
There are two different kits, one for solid-frame (short follower) and one for take-down frame (long follower).† The kits are easily installed and a gunsmith is not usually required.*
— Kit Includes: 1 Magazine Spring and 1 Magazine Follower.
